RoRo & Oversized Ocean Shipping from China to the World

When cargo is too large, too heavy, or designed to roll, standard containers are not always the answer. RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) and oversized / project ocean shipping move wheeled equipment, machinery and modular units safely and efficiently.

CITYCARGO supports overseas agents and project clients with China-origin export from Shenzhen, Shanghai and other Mainland ports to destinations worldwide — with practical origin coordination, flexible routing and clear documentation.

What Is RoRo Shipping?

RoRo means cargo is rolled on and rolled off the vessel via ramps, instead of being lifted by crane into a container. It is ideal for cargo that has wheels or can be towed / driven.

Once on board, units are secured with blocks, braces and lashings for the voyage.

Typical RoRo cargo includes:

  • Passenger vehicles, vans and trucks

  • Construction and mining equipment on wheels

  • Trailers, RVs, mobile homes and modular units on wheels / frames

  • Agricultural and industrial wheeled machinery

  • Other self-propelled or towable equipment

Why Ship Oversized / RoRo from China with CITYCARGO

Origin strength in China

  • Factory and yard coordination in Shenzhen / South China

  • Loading and export support from Shanghai and other major Mainland ports

  • Flexible multi-port options when space or schedules are tightPractical project support

    • Dimension and weight review before booking

    • Advice on RoRo vs container vs breakbulk

    • Export documentation and Agent-as-Shipper options when needed

    Worldwide destinations

    • We arrange China export to major trade lanes worldwide (subject to vessel and port acceptance)

Benefits of RoRo for Suitable Cargo

  • Simpler handling for wheeled units — no container stuffing required

  • Often more cost-effective than forcing oversized items into special containers

  • Faster preparation at origin when units are ready to roll

  • Suitable for high or heavy wheeled equipment that containers cannot take

Important: Personal belongings are usually not allowed inside vehicles on RoRo. If personal effects must travel with the unit, container shipping is often more appropriate.

Case Study: Modular Temporary Housing – Shanghai to Australia (Ro-Ro)

Challenge

A client needed to move large temporary housing modules from China to Australia. The units were project-scale, not suitable for standard dry containers, and required a method that could handle oversized modular structures safely.

Solution

CITYCARGO arranged Ro-Ro / roll-on style ocean movement with origin coordination from the Shanghai side. The focus was on:

  • Confirming dimensions and readiness for vessel acceptance

  • Aligning export documentation and loading window

  • Using a method suited to modular / mobile-type structures rather than forcing a standard container solution

Result

The temporary housing units were successfully shipped from the China origin to Australia under a project-style Ro-Ro arrangement — demonstrating that oversized modular cargo can move efficiently when origin planning and the right vessel method are aligned.

Why this matters for agents

Project and modular cargo often fails when the wrong mode is chosen too late. Early dimension review and China-port coordination reduce cost and delay risk.

What We Need for a RoRo / Oversized Quote

Please provide:

  • Exact dimensions (L × W × H) and weight per unit

  • Photos or drawings if available

  • Whether the unit is self-propelled, towable, or static

  • Origin city / factory area (Shenzhen, Shanghai, other)

  • Destination country and preferred port if known

  • Ready date and any project deadline

The more precise the data, the faster we can confirm workable vessel options.

How We Work

  1. Cargo assessment — size, weight, roll capability

  2. Mode recommendation — RoRo / container / breakbulk

  3. Origin plan — Shenzhen, Shanghai or alternative Mainland port

  4. Quotation — transparent structure where possible

  5. Execution — factory/yard coordination, export docs, loading support
